Harold Ackerman

Native of Wilkes-Barre, PA, I was raised in Benton, PA, where I learned to fish.  I taught school for 35 years.  My education in English and American literature, as well as rhetoric and linguistics, took me through a BS. Ed., an  M.A., and  a Ph.D.  Having retired from teaching, I acted on a long-time interest in photography, taking advantage of the emergence of Digital SLR technology.  Though I haven't studied photography formally, I have made a study of various artists and photographers who constitute my "influences," including Man Ray, Francis Picabia, Edward Steichen, and Eudora Welty.  Let me here offer a formal appreciation, as well, to Marlin Wagner who has generously shared his immense knowledge of camera technique and art.  Marlin has also printed nearly all of my photographs since early 2005.  For me, photography is always a study of light, and I tend to resist beautifying the photo after the shot.  Also, as light is their true subject, I understand my photos as abstract compositions, even when they are realistic, or is it the reverse?
